In June 2010, Carilion Clinic will graduate its first, newly trained neurosurgeon. Often called “brain surgeons” neurosurgeons also treat problems in the spine and peripheral nerves. They are a vital part of the region’s medical community, treating seriously injured accident victims, patients with brain tumors and aneurysms, children with spina bifida and hydrocephalus, along with people suffering from many types of back and neck ailments, as well as many other disorders of the nervous system.
