Our Program

Mission and Vision

Our mission

We strive to prepare physicians to care for and improve the health of individuals, families and communities.

The Family Medicine Residency Program:

  • Is a dynamic community focused on excellence in education and service
  • Has an atmosphere encouraging personal and professional growth through feedback, continuous improvement and an attitude of life-long learning
  • Is a champion for coordination and collaboration with other professionals who are serving our patients

Our Vision

  • We are dedicated to helping our residents develop the skills necessary to practice exceptional family medicine in the future
  • We envision a commitment to service, clinical competence, effective communication, the building of patient-provider relationships, collaboration, life-long learning, integrity and a comprehensive approach to patient care
  • We believe physicians who have their foundation in these values and the skills of medical informatics, population-based medicine, health promotion/disease prevention, clinical ethics, critical thinking, continuous improvement and healthcare management will be well prepared to practice in our ever-changing health care environment

Overview

Our two well-equipped Family Medicine Centers serve as vibrant models of patient care and education to the surrounding communities. We serve people of diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds from urban, suburban and rural areas.

Inpatient care is delivered at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, which serves as the primary healthcare provider to the region's 250,000 residents and as a tertiary care referral center to a population of over one million. Several PGY-1 and PGY-2 rotations occur at the Salem Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Carilion Clinic’s Department of Medical Education offers residency programs in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, OB-GYN, Psychiatry, General Surgery, Neurosurgery and a transitional year of training. The Family Medicine Residency offers fellowships in Medical Informatics add link to that page and Geriatrics add link to that page.

Our Family Medicine Residency, a 10/10/10 program, is a dynamic, nationally respected teaching program affiliated with the University of Virginia and the Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine. For over 35 years we have provided quality medical care to the people of southwest Virginia, while preparing the family medicine leaders of tomorrow.

Dual Accreditation

The Carilion Clinic Family Medicine Residency is dually accredited by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians (ACOFP). We offer a three-year program in allopathic and osteopathic Family Medicine. Osteopathic residents have the option of being dually board-certified by the American College of Osteopathic Family Medicine and the American Board of Family Medicine at the end of their three years of training. We do not offer a solo rotating internship. By integrating our residency curriculum with osteopathic manipulative therapy (OMT), we have strengthened our musculoskeletal curriculum in a number of areas for our residents. Musculoskeletal problems account for 30 percent of family medicine visits, and osteopathic skills can be invaluable in conditions such as back pain and sports medicine injuries.

Teaching

The Carilion Clinic Family Medicine Residency is a teaching site for students from the University of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University-Medical College of Virginia, and the Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Starting August 2010, we will be involved in the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine  student education. Add link to Carilion’s page about new medical school.  We have been recognized as a top teaching site by both UVA and VCU.

On hospital rotations, residents assist with medical student teaching starting in the intern year. In the outpatient setting, medical students are paired with an upper-level resident who is primarily responsible for teaching under the supervision of the faculty preceptor.

Workshops and Didactic Sessions

Each Wednesday afternoon residents and faculty gather for a dedicated three-hour didactic session. Rotating topics enhance the curriculum and provide evidence-based approaches to commonly seen issues in Family Medicine. Many of these sessions are hands-on workshops.
