How Giles doctors are going the extra mile to keep kids safe and active

Doctors in Giles County have supported local athletics for 30 years, providing free sports physicals to students. Dr. Robert Devereaux with Carilion Clinic Family Medicine - Pearisburg, told WDBJ he and his colleagues are trying to encourage kids to be active, while keeping them safe.

Art is in the Air at Carilion

Among the many guests with whom I had moving conversations this past weekend was a handsome young man who came up to me and pointed out an extensive scar. "I know it will sound crazy at first," he said, "but I wanted you to see that I survived this injury and got 77 stitches. I had been touch-and-go for 7 minutes, in the emergency room, back when this happened, but the angels helped me stay. I say angels because when the accident happened and I was unconscious, I saw 7 angels. So you can see that 7 is my lucky number, or that's how I see it. And the only thing as lucky as 7 in a long time is getting to see your art here."

Will these videos change your end-of-life plan?

It is perhaps one of the most difficult conversations between a doctor and a dying patient. How much should we do to keep you alive? Some health providers are trying a new approach - using frank, detailed videos describing advanced life-prolonging measures such as CPR and ventilators to help patients and their families make informed decisions.

Congratulations to the winners of Carilion Clinic's first employee art show!

As part of the Robert L.A. Keeley Healing Arts Program, Carilion partnered with the National Arts Program to sponsor its first employee art show. 165 Carilion employees, volunteers and immediate family members submitted 271 pieces.  The display of creativity and talent was amazing! Congratulations and thanks to all who entered.  See for yourself, and hear from some of the winners and judges.  Voting for the People's Choice Award continues through June 15th.
