A support and educational group for sleep apnea patients. Bring your PAP unit and have it checked! Meetings feature special topics, guest speakers, literature, problem solving, and sharing of personal experiences. Meetings are open to patients, family members, friends, health care providers, and anyone interested in learning more about sleep apnea and associated issues.

The following services will be available from 6:15 - 6:45 p.m.:

Thomas Kerkering, M.D., an infectious disease specialist at Carilion Clinic and Molly O'Dell, M.D., director of the Virginia Department of Health's New River District will be speaking at a seminar at Whitman Theater at Virginia Western Community College.

They will be discussing how Ebola can be transmitted, public prevention strategies, screening procedures at airports, and treatment options.

Other officials will be participating from the health department, Virginia Western, local EMS units and the Near Southwest Preparedness Council.

This is as close as you'll come to a baby owner's manual.  A qualified teacher covers the basics of caring for a newborn by addressing such topics as bathing, getting the baby to sleep, understanding baby's cry, diapering, dressing, temperature taking, feeding a newborn, home and car safety, and more.  This class offers expectant parents the opportunity to practice taking care of baby's basic needs.  Plan to attend this one-evening class in your second or third trimester.

Learn about the basics of infant CPR in this educational class.  The class offers hands-on training and experience in infant CPR, but is not a certification class.  You will also learn how to keep your home safe for your child.  There are many hidden dangers in the home that can injure or kill a child.  This class will give you tips on what you can do to avoid these unnecessary incidents.

Happiest Baby On The Block

This is a one-session class to learn the secrets of calming a crying baby in minutes.  You'll learn, step-by-step, how to help your baby sleep and how to soothe even the fussiest baby.  This class is based on the highly effective, new approach to babies pioneered by Dr. Harvey Karp in his best-selling book and DVD, "The Happiest Baby on the Block".  Class cost includes a Happiest Baby on the Block™ DVD.  Every expectant and new parent, grandparent, and caregiver should attend.

Breastfeeding For Working Mothers

Learn how to plan and prepare to continue breastfeeding once you return to work.  Taught by an experienced lactation educator, this class will give mothers step-by-step instructions on what they should prepare while on maternity leave, and how to pump and store their breast milk once they are back at work.  Nursing babies are welcome to come with their mothers.  Please make alternate childcare arrangements for older children.  Attend before or after the birth of your baby.  It is recommended that mothers take the basic breastfeeding class first.

Breastfeeding 101

Breastfeeding is a learned behavior for both mom and baby.  During this class, a certified lactation consultant provides the information you need to decide if breastfeeding is the right choice for you and your new baby.  If you have already decided to breastfeed, this class will provide basic instructions on breastfeeding techniques and benefits.  Other breastfeeding topics will also be discussed.
