When the diagnosis is Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia, grief doesn’t wait for death. Grieving can begin in the doctor’s office when patients and families receive confirmation of illness. Over a span of what may be a decade, multiple losses associated with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia become a pervasive part of everyday life for millions of patients, their families and friends. After the death, survivors’ grief may be complicated by the nature of a lengthy disease process that has changed their relationship with the deceased. Through a combination of candid, compelling interviews and live, in-studio discussion, experts will identify how medical and social service professionals can best help patients, families and themselves cope with loss and grief associated with these progressive illnesses. For full program details, see HFA’s website at www.hospicefoundation.org.

Our day-camp experience, for children and teens ages 5 to 17 that have lost a loved one, provides a caring, safe environment where campers are free to explore their feelings and concerns. Campers learn that grief is not a process of forgetting, but remembering with less pain.

Camp Treehouse provides the opportunity for campers to meet others their age who know what it’s like to have experienced a death of someone they love. Campers will share memories, explore feelings, and remember loved ones through creative and recreational activities. Activities will include art, crafts, music, games, and outdoor activities. A continental breakfast and lunch is provided.

While not mandatory, parents or guardians are encouraged to attend. Adults will participate in group sessions designed to better understand a child’s grieving process and how they can best support their child’s needs. Grief counselors and volunteers are specially trained to assist those who have lost a loved one. Many have experienced similar losses in their own lives.

Camp Treehouse is a free service of Carilion Clinic Hospice. Priority is given to first-time campers. Photographs will be taken throughout the day (there are opt-out options at time of registration).

Space is limited! Register by Sept. 18 by calling 540-563-5316, ext. 3014.
