Carilion Clinic, in partnership with the City of Roanoke, created the Dr. Robert L.A. Keeley Healing Garden on the Roanoke River Greenway near Roanoke Memorial Hospital. The healing garden provides a relaxing atmosphere for patients, visitors and staff to sit or swing and enjoy fragrant plants and the soothing sound of moving water.

Keep Us Safe In The Storm

The sliding glass doors at the front of Carilion open and suffering enters. This suffering is not limited to the patients in their rooms or the family and friends who attend them. Today, while walking through the glass doors into the volunteer office, I discovered that sorrow had also entered; recently, two women each lost an adult son and a third lost a 22 year old nephew.

This year-end post is written by the many people-visitors, employees and patients.-who write a note at my table in the lobby. I honor the notes, and the people who write them, by placing them into an altered book of notes that I am creating.

Come to the Table

Sometimes, when I visit different floors in the hospital, it seems like it is a no-patient-day; people being released, mothers-to-be in long term labor and delivery aren’t feeling too well and children in Pediatric Oncology and Hematology are sleeping. This is an invitation to return to my table in the lobby and to the notes that visitors and employees continue to leave in my clay boat: small, white pieces of paper penciled with notes of hope, trust, longing and despair.
