Charles J. Schleupner, MSc, MD, FACP, FIDSA, FSHEA
IRB Chair

Dr. Schleupner is professor of Internal Medicine with the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. He is on the medical staff at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital and the Salem Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He has received numerous grants for research studies in virology and other infectious diseases. He received his medical degree from the University of Maryland and completed his Internal Medicine residency and a fellowship in Infectious Diseases at the University of Utah Medical Center. He received a master’s degree in microbiology from the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health.

Charles A. Hite, III, MA, CIP
Director, Biomedical and Research Ethics

Chuck became interested in biomedical ethics during a fellowship at the University of Virginia Center for Biomedical Ethics, which he participated in as a part of his career in journalism. Not long after that fellowship, and becoming a Pulitzer Prize finalist for the article that resulted, he accepted his current position at Carilion and has earned his Master's in Biomedical Ethics from the University of Virginia. As Director of Biomedical and Research Ethics, Chuck provides administrative oversight and support to the IRB.

Janet D. McDowell, PhD, CHC
IRB Regulatory Affairs Administrator

Janet joined the staff of the IRB in April 2015.  She was previously employed in Carilion’s Corporate Compliance Department for seven years and has been associated as a consultant to or member of Carilion’s Biomedical Ethics Committee since its inception.  Janet holds a PhD in religious studies with a concentration in ethics from Duke University. She earned the CHC (Certification in Healthcare Compliance) designation in 2012. She has taught medical and business ethics at Hollins University, Roanoke College, Washington and Lee University and Mary Baldwin College.

Meredith T. Talmadge, RHIT, CIP
IRB Administrator

Meredith re-joined the staff of the Carilion IRB in January 2008. She had previously served for three years as the IRB Administrator before relocating to the Tidewater area where she was the research coordinator for a pediatric hematology/oncology clinic. Meredith has a Bachelor's Degree in Research and Behavior as well as an Associates's Degree in H.I.M.

Susan M. Curtiss, AS
Department Secretary II

Susan joined the IRB staff as Department Secretary in July 2005. She received an Associate of Science Degree with minors in both Bible and Secretarial Science from Cincinnati Christian University in 1988. Susan has almost 20 years work experience in an office environment. She also serves as the Department Secretary for Biomedical and Research Ethics and Continuing Medical Education.
